Biometric requirements for government IDs have been finalized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. As a part of the FIPS 201 standard, all agency ID cards will have to comply with Special Publication 800-76’s fingerprint and facial image storage procedures.
According to NIST: “The Biometric Data Specification for Personal Identity Verification document enumerates required procedures and formats for fingerprints, fingerprint templates and facial images by appropriate instantiation of values and practices generically laid out in published biometric standards.”
