October 27, 2006 marked the deadline for each department or agency within the Federal government’s executive branch to meet the requirements of Homeland Security Presidential Directive HSPD-12 and the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 201. This deadline required the production and issuance of credentials (Personal Identity Verification or PIV cards) that meet minimum policy and technical standards.
